Fans Of Canadian Minor League Lacrosse Are Out Of Control, Apparently

We've all heard abuse heaped on referees in virtually every sport. It's not pretty sometimes. Well, one lacrosse league in Canada near Vancouver has found a simple solution: tell fans to shut up for an entire game.

The Port Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association has ordered that the stands remain silent for five games this season, meaning fans can't even so much as clap during the game.

(Head referee Craig) Labranche said many sports, such as lacrosse, hockey and soccer, have trouble keeping young referees because they quit rather than endure jeering from unhappy fans. ...

"We needed to do something," (association president David Clarke) said. "You toss out the odd parent and it seems like they're always getting replaced by another irate parent."

They should take the Baltimore Orioles approach. After all, empty seats can't boo.
